Why Do I Need a Bookkeeper or Accountant?

Depending on your needs as a business owner, this answer could vary. A couple of main functions an accountant or bookkeeper handles are the daily accounting records, and filing taxes. There are many other services a bookkeeper or accountant may be able to provide, such as paying bills, handling payroll, working out a budget for your business, or forecasting growth and cashflow.

If you don’t have the time or desire to handle your own accounting or tax preparation and filing, you’ll likely look to an accountant or bookkeeper to handle these functions for you.

Will a Bookkeeper Save Me Money?

That certainly depends on your business, and likely no accountant or bookkeeper will make a guarantee of saving money for you. However, in looking at some of the functions a good accountant or bookkeeper will handle for you, it’s possible to see an opportunity there.

If you don’t currently have a system of keeping track of your business expenses, there’s a chance that you’re missing valid business deductions that could lower your tax bill. Additionally, a good accountant or tax preparer will be able to ensure you’re maximizing your tax deductions, again lowering your tax bill.

One huge benefit to having a good bookkeeper or accountant, keeping up your regular bookkeeping and meeting with you on your reports regularly, is to give you insights on how your business is doing financially, what is making your business money and what is costing it. Having this information and using it regularly can certainly help to save your business money in the long run.
